Turning Political Parties into Lobbyists;
With Proportional Representation the Legislature is splintered into many small Parties with no clear Party to govern. The Parties are left to LOBBY for the power to govern. The Parties are no long ELECTED to govern, they are left to do what they do best – making backroom deals.
With the Legislature splintered into many small groups creates a breeding ground for THIRD PARTY LOBBYISTS to flourish. Corporations and other special interest groups can play Parties off each other. There are more Parties to play with. Corporations and special interest groups will have more influence in how we are governed.
The Electorate;
In a Democracy it is the responsibility of the Electorate to ELECT who governs. With Proportional Representation the Electorate ABANDONS their responsibility and pass it to the PARTIES. The PR promoters say that the Parties can cooperate and govern together, because the Electorate are unable to cooperate, the Parties must. With the Electorate abandoning their responsibility greatly weakens our Democracy.
The Legislature;
Our current Legislature consists of 87 MLAs. These 87 MLAs DO NOT represent the 3,000,000 BC voters; they DO represent the 87 BC COMMUNITIES. To expect each MLA to honestly represent 35,000 voters is totally UNREALISTIC and a complete fantasy. Each MLA can represent 1 BC COMMUNITY; it is the Party that elects the most COMMUNITY-MLAs that governs. The Province-wide Popular Vote is NOT RELEVANT to this system.
The Communities;
It is in each of the 87 Communities that the Popular Vote becomes RELEVANT. We need a system where each of the 87 MLAs are elected with a minimum of a Majority of voter support in each Community.
With the need to have a Majority of voter support in each Community, means the Voters in each Community needs to COOPERATE with each other to elect the BEST CANDIDATE to represent their Community. With the Majority of Voters support the MLA, the electorate in each Community have a STRONG AND CLEAR voice in the Legislature. With a STRONG AND CLEAR voice behind the MLA, the MLA is more difficult to LOBBY.
With the requirement of the MLA needing a Majority of their constituency’s support makes the MLA much more ACCOUNTABLE AND RESPONSIVE to the Community’s electorate. Reaching a Majority of support is difficult to achieve, however, a Majority of support is EASY TO LOSE. This is what Instant Run-off Voting (IRV) gives us.
Democracy;
With each of the 87 Communities having a STRONG AND CLEAR voice strengthens the DEMOCRACY in each of the Communities. This STRONG DEMOCRACY in each Community is mirrored in our Legislature and we have a STRONG DEMOCRATIC GOVERNMENT.
