Productive, Accountable, Responsive Government
With the Electorate divided into many small groups (Parties) the Party has much more ability to dictate with the Party’s Policies and Philosophies. It requires the Electorate to take sides by the competing Parties. The elected MLA only needs more votes than any other candidate; there is no quota of support required. The more divided the Electorate the easier it is to being elected and to dominate (Divide & Conquer). The Parties & Candidates do not need to seriously listen to the Electorate.
IRV ability of making every vote matters means that the electorate can actually vote for who they truly support, without fear of having their vote ignored. We can actually see how much true support the big Parties have. The big Parties may not be so big, when the Voter can freely vote without fear.
IRV requirement that the majority of votes is to elect the MLA change the whole electoral process. The electorate are encouraged to unite their voice and to express their full voice. With the electorate’s full voice, the candidates and the Parties need to listen to the voice of the electorate. The Party’s policies need to be modified to accommodate the voice of the electorate. The MLAs and the Parties are a lot more accountable to the electorate.
IRV with the single-MLA per riding keeps a strong Local Community Representation as well as a majority government keeps a very productive government that is strongly accountable.
Instant Runoff Voting changes the whole electoral game and puts the electorate in the driver-seat. The Parties are more in the back-seat. This is why IRV is not seen as a true option by the Politicians and the Parties.
The preferential voting (IRV or Vote123);
1. It makes every vote matter, there are no ignored votes.
2. It requires the Majority of votes cast to elect the representative, no more being elected with 30% support.
3. With the requirement of a Majority of support the elected representative is much more accountable to the electorate.
4. In order to achieve the Majority support the representative will actually have to LISTEN to the electorate more than their Party. If they want a Majority support. The representative is much more responsive to the electorate.
5. It also UNITES the voice of the electorate, to give clear direction to the government. This makes the government much more productive.
These are much more correction of FPTP than PR offers. PR just wants to separate the electorate into many small groups (Parties), no unity, no accountability, not responsive, mixed messages is what PR gives us.
The Parties will make false statements and half-truths about IRV to discredit IRV.
